In 1974 after having recorded twelve albums in two years Aynsley was acclaimed by the music industry as the world's leading session musician. Theres a heavy jazz-fusion influence, and none of the songs are as anthemic as Dont Stop Believin or Lights, the songs that would make you famous. We argued over every second of it at one point. Dont go out and play these songs with someone else and crack the stone. We actually never even quit. But some- times I can just close my eyes and let him ride out awhile. Its no different. I walk onstage. I'll give it up; " It was more like, "I got this far. We were destroyed by thathe was a wonderful singer, a wonderful bass player, and a great guy, and he was part of a real interesting chemistry that Columbia wanted to sign. Everybody thinks singers are prima donnas. I imagine its really easy to be a functioning alcoholic when youre on tour with a rock band. And it took a few more months, until October, and then I was ready, and found the right doctor for me. I just dont wanna be in the band anymore. If you want to make a song a hit record, it's got to be clean, crisp, and to the point. So I felt, seeing as I'm doing that, I might as well be running my own band and making some cash, because we were on a paid wage routine with him. PERRY: Yeah. I was always on the edge of being what I expected out of myself, and what people wanted me to be, and I never wanted to settle for anything short of what it should be. Because since Mayhold on, Ive got the fax on my wall, in my studio. Most of the drum parts on that were written down. She's the most amazing reader-very disciplined. I wanted to play violin when I was seven, but my parents wouldn't buy me one because they thought I would just waste the time and money. It was a wonderful experience. Its been a love-hate thing. You didnt make another record for ten years after that. So I came home, took care of that, went back, finished the vocals and stuff, and before I know it, were on tour. . And that just kinda came out of nowhere. RM: I noticed you and Craig looking at each other a lot. But I don't feel I want to jump on that particular bandwagon. Zappa let me do whatever I wanted to with it, so I played like a frustrated drummer. Do you think you'll have your own group again sometime? Would you ever be interested in doing regular studio work, such as commercials? I like to play on stage and have that good feeling that comes from the people. But Im just not in it for the money. I go there, from time to time, when Im in town. When you changed your sound, what was the thought process behind that? Theres like 20 different prosthetics, all claiming to be the one that lasts, and I had to do research on that crap. AD: I did eight albums with Frank, starting with Chunga's Revenge. Enjoy! I still never wanted Journey to go away, because it was something that I was there from the beginning and started. I stll perspire a lot, but it's just from my body working. I was taken to London by the Mojos. If somebody said anything to me, I'd blow up, because my nerves were shattered from being in a complete state of exhaustion. I started Blue Whale, which was an 8-piece band. Then he started hitting the drugs, because I think he got bored, and he started becoming a space case. So Don Ellis called me and said Herbie wanted me to fly out and meet Neal. That was pretty interesting and he was a great help. So I decided it was time to get rid of that band arid start another one. AD: On. I was writing for the people who might want to listen to it. And theyve really liked it. Would you saythat your style has changed over the years or is it just the difference in the music you are playing? They love the band enough to lay down on the sidewalk? If you're playing nice and relaxed in front of 20,000 people, they're not going to pick up any energy from that. Not at all. There are different ways you can work it. But they didnt have any quote hit records, and werent on the radio much. Aynsley Dunbar returned home from touring with David Bowie to find a message from Herbert waiting for him. Almost exactly like the panic I felt before I got into the band, Journey. So I find it better to listen to what is being played on the top and then react to that. The manager, Herbie, fought for me to be in that band, when they werent sure. I dont wanna see that get damaged. Ross Valory had played with Steve Miller and people like that, I didnt have that. AD: The guys in the Starship know how to lock in and play as a band.
